IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT

July 2nd, 2008

by Carl Han

In The Heat of a Disco Night
The Houston’s heat is killing me.  I think I will literally melt away by the time September comes along.  Gary and I attended the HATCH Anual Alternative Prom.  The theme was disco and we wore our purple suits one more time for the occasion and arrived in full costume including our boas and ‘pimp sticks”.  We also brought a few items for the HATCH members ranging from lighted tiaras to the boas.

This was the first time the prom was held at the new Montrose Counseling Center and I like it.  The “prom hall” was spacious and beautifully decorated by the staff and volunteers.  Gary and I met several friends there and made several new friends also.  The only problem, and it is a big problem for me, was that the air condition was not working properly and it was unbearably hot for the both of us in our purple pimp daddies outfits.  However, we drank about a gallon of diet coke to cool off and there were paper fans for all the guests.  We all had a nice time and there were plenty of dancers to fill the dance floor.

Gary and I decided that next year we will volunteer to help HATCH set up for the prom.  We will probably manage the “buffet”.

In The Heat of a True Colors Night

Gary and I along with thousands of Houstonians attended the Cyndi Lauper’s True Colors concert.  It was held at the Woodlands Pavillion about 25 miles north of downtown Houston.  This is a nice outdoor venue but it was hot.  Wanda Sykes, the popular comediene, walked out on stage and announced that it was “Africa hot!”.  The concert was started by Cyndi Lauper to promote equality for the LGBT community.

We cooled our heated bodies with $4 bottled water and $10 beer!!!!  The food service provider for most venues in the Greater Houston area is by a company named Aramark.  It should be renamed “Irobyoumark”

The evening concert was emceed by Carson Kressley of “Queer Eyes” from Bravo TV and he was very good.  The performers consisted of violinist/rocker Lilly Haydn, Wanda Sykes, Andy Bell, Joan Jett, B 52’s and Cyndy Lauper.  The full 4 hours concert started at 6 PM and ended at 10 PM and despite the heavy rain earlier during the day, not a single drop of rain fell on us that evening.

In The Heat of a Gay Pride Night

Three evening outdoor events in 4 weeks in the heat!  I did it out of love and passion.  Just to let the readers know how I feel about heat, I have a fan that runs 24 hours a day even in the middle of the cooler winter months.

Houston was the first major city in the US to have a night time gay pride parade.  All the floats and marchers are encouraged to be lighted up.  The social group that Gary and I belong to, Asian & Friends Houston, had a long and shimmering gold dragon which received one of the largest cheer from the hundred thousand plus parade viewers.

We started this day arriving to the Montrose area (gay part of town) and attended the day time pride festival.  We  then went to an annual block party that is hosted by neighbors of my friend, Julie.  This was our third year going to this party.  The hosts are known for serving the drink, ”Red Rooster”, a frozen delight cocktail made of cranberry juice, orange juice and vodka.  The sweet and addictive drink can cause serious dammage if one is not careful.

Gary and I met up with Kate, Chuck and Annie on Westheimer Blvd to catch the parade which started at 8:45 PM.  It was fun as always and I made a video which is now on youtube.com. Unfortunately, our video camcorder failed to power up and I had to use my cheap camera to record the parade.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IQHYVPF4nK8

I have been involved with Houston Gay Pride since a teenager and for me it is more than having a good time, it is about standing up and fighting for true equality.

Until next time. Thank you for reading.

Carl Han

The Love Train Express

June 22nd, 2008

THE LOVE TRAIN

After spending five months getting ready for  the Love Party 2008 - The Love Train, I am happy to say that the party was a major success.  We raised a total of $876.00 on May 17 for HATCH (Houston Area Teen Coalition of Homosexuals).   The 75 plus guests enjoyed hors’ doeuvres ranging from Vietnamese egg rolls, Vietnamese spring rolls, pate, cream cheese caviar, four kind of cheeses, petit fours and champagne cookies.

All the guests received a gift bag which contained various goodies including incense, toy train, train toot toot whopee cushion, a train whistle, a plastic beaded bracelet and  various valentine ducks and rainbow colored feather boas.  Our performers also received pink diva gloves, brass incense burner in the shape of an Aladin lamp.

Gary and I went purple for the party.  Is it our bellies or the suits?  I swear the camera really added an extra 100 pounds on us.

I want to thank my aunt, Linh, my aunt Van, my friends, Minh , Carl & Khoi, Kate and Gary for helping out with the “egg roll” fund.  I also want to thank David, Adi, Chris, Diana, Julie & Lewis for helping me at the party.

I am grateful to have such wonderful entertainers including my guest of honor, Noel Boado/Yna Nova (who did not have a chance to make a speech) .  Tribal Lillies, Christina Lee, China Doll and Yna Nova produced one incredible show.

A special thank to Meteor and its staff including the DJ for all their hard work that night.

LET US ENTERTAIN YOU

Chris Kerr of the Montrose Counseling Center took the mike at 8:30 pm and spoke about HATCH.  Unfortunately, Chris’ partner, Michael, had to fly out to Malaysia this night so they had to rushed to the airport.  Michael’s mother was suffering from an illness and I am sad to know that his mother passed away  a short time after he arrived to Malaysia.

My three videos, What’s Left To Say, Hungry For Love & The Love Train was shown next and I am very happy to see that on the big screens at Meteor, the videos looked fabulous.  The videos can be viewed at youtube.com (search for my name Carl Han and user name of cahan).  Details of the videos will be at the very end of this article.  I will also upload  the entertainers’ performance on youtube in the near future.

THE DANCERS

The entertainers took over the stage with Cindy of Tribal Lillies starting off with an energetic solo dance which was immediately followed by the remaining dancers as they danced “In Two” by Carrie Ann & the Apocalyptics, a local band in Houston.

THE DIVAS

Yna Nova strutted her stuff in a Tina Turner inspired do.   It was “HOT STUFF”!  China Doll followed with a long diva entrance. She was covered from neck to toe in an outfit that reminded me of one of those boring teacher from the Harry Potter’s series.  Within 30 seconds, China ripped it off to revealed a hot pink unitard that draw a big cheer from the crowd as she danced to the beat of Ms. Celine’s dance remix of ”Because You Loved Me”.

WHO’S AFRAID OF CHRISTINA LEE

Christina Lee’s first Houston’s public performance in many years did not dissappoint.  Using a bar stool as her prop, she began slowly with “Lovin’ You” .  Just when the audience thought that this was a typical drag diva number, Christina produced something that was truly frightening.  Let put it this way; it was hot pink, about 12 inches long and thick as a wrist.  The crowd roared with laughter as Christina was “lovin’it”  with her tongue and lips’ action.
